Camille Tanoh / New York

An independent gaze.

A French designer of Ivorian descent, Camille Tanoh brings the precision of tailoring into conversation with image, music and the culture of sport.

Atelier

The discipline of making.

A line is drawn, a proportion measured, a construction refined. The work of the atelier gives an idea its form.

Research & development

An idea, refined by hand.

An annotated line, a corrected proportion, a sample compared with the drawing. Camille Tanoh develops the Proper Moccasin through successive adjustments to its shape, strap, stitching and relationship to the foot.

01 / Founder’s Letter

A French perspective. An open horizon.

The Proper Label begins with a personal proposition: to bring the considered language of a French maison into the culture of sport.

French identity, Ivorian roots and life in New York meet in a wardrobe made to be lived in. A shirt for an ordinary morning. A shoe that finds its place in a daily ritual. Pieces that accompany work, movement and the moments that gather us together.

02 / Journey

One idea, successive chapters.

The journey begins at ground level: a shoe, a silhouette, a way of carrying oneself. Footwear leads to film, and the individual object opens into the language of a Maison.

Care is a form of respect.

A proportion resolved. A garment that allows movement. A welcome that feels personal. The values of the Maison are carried in these small decisions, repeated over time.

On Clothes and Self-Esteem

Getting dressed can be a small act of authorship: a way to meet the day, and to make room for the person we are becoming.

Before a garment becomes an image, it is something we live in. We feel its weight, adjust a sleeve, notice the fall of a trouser. These private gestures come before the judgement of a mirror or the gaze of another person.

There is possibility in that moment. A familiar shirt can offer ease on an unfamiliar day; a new proportion can let us try a different way of carrying ourselves. Clothes can support the confidence to enter a room, speak, take part. Their value lies as much in how they allow us to feel as in how they appear.

Growth also means learning what feels like our own. It may be a quieter wardrobe, a bolder one, or simply the freedom to wear a favourite piece again. The important question is whether we recognise ourselves in it.

Self-esteem grows through experience, relationships and the regard we learn to hold for ourselves. Clothing has a modest, meaningful place in that process. The Maison’s responsibility is to offer ease, dignity and freedom of expression. The person gives the clothes their meaning.

06 / Identity

More fully yourself.

A wardrobe evolves with the life around it. Keep what feels true. Leave room for a different proportion, another rhythm, a new chapter. Identity is allowed to grow without losing its centre.
