Chapter 01 / 14

2012

The first step.

The Saturday Afternoon Man Shoe begins with a simple observation: a good shoe should move naturally between the relaxed and the dressed. Created by Camille Tanoh with Hakan Sezer, the collection brings supple leather and coloured suede to a single-eyelet silhouette, handmade in Portugal. Before there was a Maison, there was this attention to how a person moves through an ordinary day.

2014

The Proper Sneaker.

A white sneaker, reduced to its essential lines. Introduced in 2014, The Proper Sneaker asks what allows an everyday object to become a classic. Loren Denis directs the launch film, with art direction and narration by Camille Tanoh. Premiered through GQ France, the film makes movement, simplicity and the passage of time part of the design itself.

Chapter 03 / 14

2015

A Monday of one’s own.

The Monday Morning Man Shoe gives the start of the week a different rhythm. For Fall / Winter 2015, a film by Loren Denis follows a cast of characters and the times at which they wake. Inspired by On Kawara’s I Got Up series, those hours also appear inside the shoes. Footwear becomes a personal ritual: familiar, individual and open to interpretation.

2016

Three stories. One language.

By 2016, Saturday Afternoon, The Proper Sneaker and Monday Morning form a small collection of objects and films. A contemporary survey of fashion films brings these three stories together, highlighting the conceptual approach behind the shoes. The thread is already clear: an everyday object can carry a character, a mood and a way of seeing.

2017

A classic, reconsidered.

The Proper Sneaker returns with a new collection and a new campaign. Reported by Hypebeast in May 2017, the project uses crowdfunding to bring its pared-back footwear directly to a community of supporters. A film directed by Jonathan Lawton gives the familiar silhouette another setting. The question remains the same: how can a considered object become part of everyday life?

2018

A name. A shared ambition.

Camille and Sonia Tanoh establish The Proper Label in New York. The footwear experiments of the preceding years become the foundation for a wider project, shaped by French upbringing, Ivorian heritage and the energy of a new city. The intention is to build a lasting wardrobe and a direct relationship with the people who wear it.

Behind the finished object.

Live from the Factory turns the camera towards making. Released in 2019, the film is directed by The Proper Kid, with cinematography by Bruno Peixoto and sound by Pedro Santos. It brings the work behind a finished pair into view: people, materials and the successive gestures through which an idea becomes something to wear.

Beyond a wardrobe.

In a conversation with Culture Study, Camille Tanoh reflects on his Ivorian roots, his Parisian beginnings and the ambition behind The Proper Label. The discussion opens the frame beyond clothing: a brand can also be a meeting place for ideas, creative work and community. The wardrobe is one expression of that wider point of view.

Paris, carried with us.

For France.fr, Camille Tanoh shares a personal route through Paris: fragrance, independent taste, contemporary art and familiar addresses. The city where he grew up remains a source of curiosity even as the Maison develops in New York. A creative identity is made from these journeys, and from the details we continue to notice along the way.

Sustainability for All.

Clothing, dance and gospel meet in Sustainability for All, the Maison’s 2023 campaign. Directed and narrated by Camille Tanoh, the project brings together the New York City Gospel Choir and a cast of performers, with campaign photography by Joel Bessa and behind-the-scenes photographs by Roxane Moreau. Its invitation is open: take part, ask where things come from, and consider what we choose to keep.

Ten years, together.

A decade after The Proper Sneaker’s debut, the Maison marks the occasion during New York Fashion Week. At 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge, the Iconic Elegance evening brings friends and supporters together around fashion, music and a shared sense of purpose. The celebration is part of a programme presented by Play 4 Purpose and Dress for Success: an anniversary lived in company.

Tailored for Champions.

The relationship with D.C. United gives the Maison’s dialogue with sport a new scale. Tailoring becomes part of the team’s arrival, expressing identity before the match begins. In July, the club’s Archive Kit campaign pairs its past and present players with custom suits designed by Camille Tanoh. Clothing, football and the memory of a club meet in the same image.

Maison de Sport.

The language of the Maison comes together across tailoring, footwear and the everyday wardrobe. Made for Club carries that point of view into the world of teams, beginning with Major League Soccer and D.C. United. Leather jackets, knitwear and club colours turn belonging into pieces to live in. From the first shoe to this shared wardrobe, the story continues through the people who make it their own.
