A field can be suggested by a change of surface. At The Proper Stadium in New York, green turf brings football into the room before any match begins. A sculptural gold boot and the objects around it shift familiar sporting forms into a setting made for looking.
The installation gives those forms a new scale. A boot, usually understood in relation to the foot, becomes a focal point. A football shares the display with it. The visitor can move between the larger gesture and the smaller details that connect it to the House.
The photographs record the setting from two distances. The wider view shows how the elements share the room; the closer view lets their surfaces and proportions become more apparent. Both are needed to understand how a place is assembled.
The Proper Stadium is part of the House's continuing exploration of football as a lived environment. Its visual language can extend beyond the match and the garment into a room where people gather, encounter the collection and spend time with the objects that belong to the game.
