The Moccasin, Off Duty

On stone, beside a bag, beneath a trouser: a shoe moving through ordinary settings.

On a pale stone shelf, the black moccasin becomes a clear study of outline. The gathered apron gives the toe its rhythm; the strap creates a band across the upper. Two shoes, turned slightly away from one another, describe the shape more naturally than a perfectly mirrored arrangement.

The other photographs return the pair to everyday settings. White bedding changes the background from hard to soft. A leather bag introduces another black surface. Beneath a trouser, only part of the shoe remains visible, and the relation between hem and toe becomes the main detail.

These changes are small, but they are useful. A shoe needs to hold its proportions when it is seen from above, caught at the edge of a chair or left beside the things carried through a day. Its character cannot depend on one carefully chosen camera angle.

The studio photograph closes the sequence with a more playful gesture: a moccasin suspended in the air above a hand. The pattern board stays behind it. The object moves, while the work that shaped it remains part of the room.
