An evening at the Garden

Basketball, personal style and the pleasure of being there. A note from Maison de Sport.

An invitation from Jakob Poeltl brought me to Madison Square Garden to watch the Toronto Raptors play the New York Knicks. I was grateful to be there: to see the game in person, to spend an evening around basketball, and to take in the world that gathers around it.

There is a particular kind of connection in a crowd watching the same court. People arrive with different stories, but for a while their attention meets in one place. The players give the evening its rhythm; the people around them give it another dimension. That shared experience is part of what keeps drawing me to sport.

Style belongs to that world, too. A team name across a knit, a familiar colour on a cap, a jacket chosen for the evening: small things that say something about the person wearing them. The Knicks pieces photographed here are a simple reminder of how naturally the language of a club becomes part of everyday dress.

At Maison de Sport, we are interested in that meeting of the game and the life around it. There is as much to observe in the stands as there is on the court: how people express themselves, how a place holds memories, how a shared interest can bring strangers into the same conversation. Being present helps keep that perspective grounded in people and in lived experience.

These photographs are a small record of the evening: basketball in motion, a few details, and time spent in good company. Thank you, Jakob, for the invitation and for making it possible to be there. It is a pleasure to feel part of this wider community, and to keep discovering it through moments like this.
